SUMMER PROGRAMS


Are you planning ahead and searching for an exciting summer 2012 adventure for a student entering grades 1-12?  See the Challenger Learning Center of Colorado 2012 Summer Mission schedule below.

Two programs will be brand new! Some will be offered more than once during the summer. Some will be offered in morning or afternoon time periods.  Some are full-day programs.

Early Bird Registration February 1 - April 15, 2012.  Recieve 10% off 1 program and 15% off 2 or more!  Registrations are taken on a first-come, first-served basis. To secure space in a program, payment for tuition is due at the time of registration. (Refunds for cancellations, less a $25 administrative fee, will be made if the cancellation is requested in writing at least 30 days prior to the session start date. Entering GRADES 1 & 2:

 

TOYS IN SPACE

MAY 29-JUNE 1, 8:30-11:30 am (4 days, $145)
JULY 9-13, 12:30-3:30 pm (5 days, $180)
Toys in Space introduces our youngest participants to physics as they relate to simple everyday toys. Campers will build or use simple toys and focus on the laws and principles of physics that govern the motion of objects (and toys!) on Earth.  They will also see what happened to some of these same toys when they were taken into space by astronauts.  Our activities will be conducted both inside our facility and outdoors.  Please be sure to send a water bottle and dress your child appropriately for outside activities.  Snacks will be provided daily.  If you have concerns about snacks, please feel free to pack a snack for your child from home.   

(Toys in Space is limited to 24 students per session.)

  

Robonauts -- NEW --

MAY 29-JUNE 1, 12:30-3:30 pm (4 days, $145)
JULY 9-13, 8:30-11:30 am (5 days, $180)
Robonauts introduces first and second graders to simple machines.  It is a hands-on exploration of physics and the foundation for robotics.  Campers will investigate simple machines such as gears, pulleys, wheels and axles while engaging their cretive and critical thinking skills.

(Robonauts is limited to 24 students per session.)

Entering GRADES 3 & 4:

 

ROCKETEERS PLUS

JUNE 18-22, 12:30-3:30 pm
JULY 30-AUGUST 3, 8:30-11:30 am
Rockets, rockets, and more rockets! Investigate the principles of flight and rocketry that have made possible mankind’s exploration of space. You will build and launch several different kinds of rockets, including a NEW Estes model. Also, experience a variety of “travels” in our Stellar Portal.

(Rocketeers Plus is limited to 28 students per session.) Cost: $180

 

MOONBASE CRISIS

JUNE 18-22, 8:30-11:30 am
JULY 30-AUGUST 3, 12:30-3:30 pm
Join Commander Zota and your teammates in this futuristic adventure to the moon. The week’s activities are based on the Star Challengers Moonbase Crisis book by best-selling authors Rebecca Moesta and Kevin J. Anderson. You will conduct lunar research, perform experiments, solve problems, build a moonbase model, and receive a signed copy of the book which was inspired by our local Challenger Learning Center in Colorado Springs.

Entering GRADES 4-6:

 

LEGO ROBOTICS I

JUNE 11-15, 8:30 am – 3:30 pm
If you have experience building Legos™ or are interested in the basics of programming robots, we have a camp for you. You will be using Lego Mindstorm™ Robotics kits to create and design various robots. Working as a team, you will program the robots to attempt numerous challenges, culminating in a final challenge.  It will have you thinking about robots for weeks to come!
(Lego Robotics is limited to 27 students. Please bring a lunch each day.) Cost: $290

 

   

Entering GRADES 5-8:

   

SPACE ACADEMY

JUNE 25-29, 8:30 am - 3:30 pm

Space Academy crewmembers will launch on important, exciting and complex missions.  They’ll start by learning more about the basics of flight and space travel, as well as the past and the future of the U.S. space program.  Then, embarking on realistic adventures, they will:  try to locate and collect particles from a fast moving comet; face natural disasters that threaten the residents of the Caribbean island of Montserrat, and explore the universe in the Stellar Portal planetarium.  They will also use real GPS receivers to experience the fun and adventure of geocaching.

MARS 2076

JULY 23-27, 8:30-11:30 am
Be a crewmember on the next mission to Mars! You will learn about Martian geology and meteorology at the Mars Base, the affects of microgravity on the body, and the navigation skills needed to successfully operate the Mars Transport Vehicle. You will also design and build a lander to survive planetary impact. Do you have the right stuff?
(Mars 2076 is limited to 28 students.) Cost: $180

MOON WALKERS

JULY 23-27, 12:30-3:30 pm
As a Moon Walker, you will look at Moon exploration, both current and future; study lunar geology; search for natural resource treasures while geocaching with real GPS satellites; perform space exercises; create your own lunar craters; and fly a mission in our simulator to deliver a probe to the surface of the Moon.

Entering GRADES 6-8:

   

LEGO ROBOTICS II -- NEW --

JULY 16-20, 8:30 am – 3:30 pm
If you have experience building Legos™ or are interested in learning more about programming robots, join us for this camp.  You will use Lego Mindstorm™ Robotics kits to design and create a variety of robots. Working as a team and after facing a series of tough challenges, you will program the robot for a final BIG challenge.  This camp will be a dream come true for robot programmers!

Entering GRADES 9-12:

 

SPACE ENGINEERING ODYSSEY

JUNE 4-8, 9:00 am - 2:00 pm
Emergency! Apply physics, biology, chemistry and computer modeling to make informed decisions while you work to save the International Space Station crew during a simulated space mission crisis. Participants experience space-based simulations and apply technology as they explore engineering opportunities in aerospace industries. Guest speakers will include aerospace professionals who will provide current information and answer questions regarding their various specialties. Space Engineering Odyssey is a must for high school students considering high-tech careers. You will improve your applied science skills and have fun doing it!
(Space Engineering Odyssey is limited to 20 students. Please bring a lunch each day.) Cost: $220

 

BONUS!

College credits available (optional, but recommended): For successful completion of Space Engineering Odyssey additional coursework, UCCS will award 2 elective physics credits (transcripted and transferrable). An additional fee of $130 applies.
