2008 ADVENTURES
Session Cancelled Space Engineering Odyssey M-F: 9:00 AM - 2:00 PM For students entering Grades 9-12 How would you protect the Space Station crew from a major solar event? Apply physics, biology, and chemistry as you investigate global solutions using computer modeling to make informed decisions to save the crew during a simulated space mission. Participants will experience space simulations and applications of technology as they explore engineering opportunities in aerospace industries. Guest speakers, including aerospace professionals, will provide current information and answer questions regarding their various specialties. This program is a must for high school students looking to enter high-tech fields, improve their applied science skills, and have fun doing it! Cost: $200 Note: College credits optional -- UCCS awards 2 Physics elective credits for coursework completed; $130 additional fee. June 16-20 Moon, Mars & Beyond M-F: 8:30-11:30 AM or 12:30-3:30 PM For students entering Grades 4-5 A deep-space exploration vessel has lost communication with Mars Mission Control. Student astronauts are asked to help rescue the vessel. Hands-on activities will prepare the team to rescue this lost ship. Success will only be possible with teamwork, quick thinking, and excellent communication skills. Are you up to the challenge? Cost: $160 June 23-27; June 9-13 Space Explorers I M-F: 9:30-11:30 AM or 12:30-2:30 PM For students entering Grades 1-2 The June 23-27 session is FULL. We have opened a NEW SESSION to handle the huge demand for this program. It will run June 9-13, same times, same cost. Call soon before this one fills up as well! Join us to make your own Mars rover! These rovers will be tasty as well as functional! Cook with a solar oven as you study the Sun. During this week, we will explore the solar system, study basic principals of flight, and ponder living in space with hands-on experiences. Participants will be actively engaged while learning more about our planets’ characteristics and geology. While working on the International Space Station, you will conduct scientific experiments such as analyzing gases using spectral analysis. And of course, there will be rockets to launch! Cost: $110 JULY
2008 ADVENTURES
July 7-11 Living in Space M-F: 8:30-11:30 AM or 12:30-3:30 PM For students entering Grades 6-8 Our bodies are designed to work in Earth’s gravity. Living for long periods in the microgravity of space presents many problems for human biological systems. This program features hands-on activities focusing on the vestibular system, circadian rhythms, the autonomic nervous system, spatial orientation, nutrition, and exercise. Students will fly two simulated space missions! This is a great opportunity to take a trip to the Moon as well as take a turn at the different work stations in our International Space Station simulator. Cost: $160 July 14-18 Space Explorers II M-F: 9:30-11:30 AM or 12:30-2:30 PM For students entering Grades 3-4 Rockets, rockets, and more rockets! Participants will investigate principles of flight and rocketry that have enabled us to explore space. Building models and launching them will be the focus for this week-long adventure. Cost: $110 July 21-25 Operation Montserrat M-F: 8:30-11:30 AM or 12:30-3:30 PM For students entering Grades 6-8 With the help of computers, the Internet and satellite imaging, students interact with the flight director to track a hurricane, predict volcanic rock fall and determine how these conditions will impact the island’s air, land, water and vegetation. This program challenges students to apply their math and science knowledge to a simulated natural disaster where space-based resources make the difference between life and death. Cost: $160 July 28 - August 1 Voyage to Mars M-F: 8:30-11:30 AM or 12:30-3:30 PM For students entering Grades 7-9 Pack your bags and go to Mars! It is the year 2076 and you’re about to relieve the crew on our first Martian base. Each crew member will learn the skills they need to successfully operate the Mars Base and Mars Transport Vehicle including geology, chemistry, meteorology, navigation, physiology, and more! Cost: $160 |
